It has been quite the week for past and present left-handed pitchers from Marjory Stoneman Douglas, highlighted by a college commitment, a major career milestone, and a long-term extension in the major leagues.
Senior Carter McGuinn announced that he has committed to the College of Central Florida. McGuinn chose the program because of its strong baseball tradition, coaching staff, and overall philosophy.
“Playing college baseball has always been a goal of mine, so being able to take this next step and continue my development at a place like CF is a huge honor,” McGuinn said. “I’m excited for the opportunity and ready to get to work.”
McGuinn began playing baseball in 2013 with North Springs Little League, competing from T-ball through the Senior division. During that time, he helped the program win a state championship in 2021. He later played travel baseball with the Original Florida Pokers beginning in 2022 after previously competing with 5 Star Mafia.
At MSD, McGuinn worked his way up from the junior varsity team before contributing to a State Championship and National Title as a junior with the Eagles. He earned a win in one of his two appearances that season.
Now a senior, McGuinn has already tripled that win total while pitching in eight games, including a start on Tuesday where he tossed 3.1 scoreless innings and struck out five in a win over True North Classical Academy
McGuinn says it has been an honor to play for MSD and to work with coaches who have continually pushed him to improve.
“Coach Fitz-Gerald and Coach Cimini have always pushed me to be the best version of myself, and they were instrumental in helping me reach my goal of committing to play college baseball,” McGuinn said.
One of the top prospects in the 2026 MLB Draft, Gio Rojas, recorded a major milestone on Wednesday night in his start against Miller School of Albemarle, notching his 200th career strikeout at MSD.
Facing a team managed by recent Hall of Fame inductee and former left-handed pitcher Billy Wagner, Rojas needed five strikeouts to reach the milestone and accomplished the feat in the fourth inning of a 3-0 win. He pitched five scoreless innings and finished the game with seven strikeouts while left-hander Joshua Jakubowicz earned the win a day later against Doral Academy.
Jesus Luzardo has also made headlines, becoming the latest former Eagle to sign a massive contract extension.
The 2016 graduate recently signed a five-year, $135 million contract extension with the Philadelphia Phillies that will keep the left-hander with the club through at least the 2031 season.
Luzardo had been set to become a free agent at the end of the season and now joins fellow Stoneman Douglas alum Roman Anthony, who recently signed an eight-year, $130 million extension with the Boston Red Sox.
During his career at MSDs, Luzardo won 23 games before being selected in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals.
He has since pitched in seven major league seasons with the Oakland Athletics, Miami Marlins, and Phillies, while also representing the Venezuela National Baseball Team in the World Baseball Classic.
During his major league career, Luzardo owns a 41-41 record with a 4.19 ERA. He went 15-7 during the 2025 season and has already appeared in one spring training game this year, tossing three scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
