The Parkland City Commission honored local schools, teams, and individuals with proclamations before the February 5 meeting.
Here’s a little about each honoree:
The Parkland Rangers’ Mitey Mite Cheerleaders were honored after placing second in the Southeast regional competition and ultimately finished ninth in the National Cheerleading Competition. Their hard work has earned them much-deserved national recognition.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas Football were District Champions and finished this season not only with an impressive record of 8-2 but also as District Champs.
The last time they were District champs before this was 18 years ago. They hadn’t even made the playoffs since 2007. A quick review of the team’s Twitter account reveals some of their senior players receiving offers to play at schools like Ave Maria University, St. Thomas University, and Indiana University. This team has upped its game over the years and continues to work hard, practice hard, and, above all, practice and play as a unified team.
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Swimming and Diving Team competed exceptionally well at District, County, and State levels this year. In the District Championship, the girls finished second, and the boys finished third. In the Broward County Athletic Association Championship, the girls placed fifth, and the boys placed eleventh. In the State Championships, Kenan Kocoglu placed 23rd in the 100-meter breaststroke and divers Penelope Jacobson and Olivia Rosen placed 15th and 17th, respectively.
All of this is symptomatic of hard work and dedication as the MSD swimming and diving team continues to progress and impress. Congratulations on great performances on District, County, and State levels.
The Parkland Soccer Club 2003 Boys Red Team won the championship at the prestigious Disney Soccer Showcase–one of the best showcases in the nation.
This team has represented Parkland well, including defeating the Florida State Champion in the Championship game of the Disney Showcase. The Parkland Soccer Club 2005 Boys Red Team achieved an unbeaten run at the Wellington Shootout and won the tournament for the second consecutive year. This team continues to perform at a high level and earn prestigious honors for its hard work.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Eagle Regiment has achieved numerous high honors this year–including being invited to perform in London, England. The band was a featured performer at Disney World, was runner-up in two championships, and was named Grand Champion at the Falcon Sound Invitational.
Heron Heights Elementary School was honored for earning their Five Star School Award. Broward County Public Schools announced the 29 District schools that earned the Five Star School Award for the 2018/19 school year.
The Florida Department of Education presents the award to schools that are committed to incorporating family and community members into the school environment to enhance student learning. Among these schools was Heron Heights Elementary School in Parkland.
February is Black History Month and, as the City of Parkland is committed to honoring African-American history, culture, and heritage, and their proclamation will make February 2020 Black History Month in the City. One intended outcome of this proclamation is to inspire Parkland residents to take an interest in black history and how black leaders have shaped change in our society.
Qwik Pack and Ship was recognized as being a part of Parkland’s Environmental Partner Program. In keeping with the City of Parkland’s slogan of “Environmentally Proud,” the City Commission has established a program to recognize environmentally friendly businesses. These are businesses that are taking steps to reduce waste, recycle, or any other initiatives that are considered environmentally friendly. The most recent addition to this proud group is Qwik Pack and Ship in Parkland Commons. In a business that uses plenty of materials, they are using recycled materials and recycling packing materials such as bubble wrap, foam peanuts, and airbags. They also shred paper that is ultimately recycled.
Moving forward, they intend to use in-store signage to raise awareness and encourage customers to recycle. Thank you to Qwik Pack and Ship for participating in the Environmental Partner Program.
Rob Windesheim, President of Parkland Lacrosse, has served proudly and honorably as the President of Parkland Recreational Lacrosse for seven years and served an additional three years as a board member before that. He is retiring, following his distinct service.
Parkland Dash Check Presentation. Each year, the City of Parkland hosts the Parkland DASH. This event raises funds for a charity and also supports Broward County schools located in the City of Parkland.
For the 2019 event, the City recognized The Arthritis Foundation as their partner and to present checks to support school projects to Heron Heights Elementary, Park Trails Elementary, Riverglades Elementary, Westglades Middle School, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
