With masks on and social distancing in place, residents took to the precincts to vote in Tuesday’s primary election — that is if they didn’t already vote early or by mail.
This year’s primary election had a generous turnout with 25 percent of registered voters compared to 16.5 percent in August 2016.
In a landslide victory, Parkland Mayor Christine Hunschofsky won the race against Saima Farooqui for Democratic State Representative District 96, which includes Parkland, Coconut Creek, and parts of Margate and Coral Springs.
A resident of Parkland for 20 years, Hunschofsky announced she would be running for the late Rep. Kristin Jacob’s Florida House seat in April. Since 2016, Mayor Hunschofsky has taken on some of the cities biggest challenges to date, including being at the helm during one of the worst school shooting massacres in the country.
In November, she will once again be on the ballot, but she will be a shoo-in, her only challenger is a write-in candidate.
In a very tight race, Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony won against Scott Israel and will hold onto his position. This will be to the relief of groups like Stand with Parkland, and his supporters in the city who backed him.
On Tuesday evening, Tony said, “As your Sheriff, I will work tirelessly to make this department a model for how a public safety agency can be effective, transparent, and accountable to our community.”
Sheriff Tony will face-off in Republican H. Wayne Clark in November.
Debra “Debbi” Hixon, a 31-year public school teacher and widow of Marjory Stoneman Douglas athletic director, Chris Hixon, won the race for Broward County School Board Seat 9.
Hixon, who is the magnet coordinator at South Broward High School, ran against four other candidates for the seat that Robin Bartleman is leaving to run for the State Legislature.
Since Hixon did not receive 50 percent of the vote, she will face off against Jeff Holness of Sunrise in the November election.
Representative Tina Polsky won the democratic race against Irv Slosberg for State Senator District 29, which covers portions of Palm Beach County, including Boca Raton, Wellington, and South Bay, as well as some Broward cities, including Parkland, Coconut Creek, and some of Coral Springs and Pompano Beach. She will run against Republican first-time candidate Brian Norton.
The 2020 general election will be held on November 3.
