As Sons Continue Chase to Big Leagues, Fitz-Gerald Family Continues Battle at Home 5

In what has been a whirlwind few months for the Fitz-Gerald family, triumph and hardship have unfolded side by side. While two young athletes pursue their dreams of professional baseball and a coach closes in on a historic milestone, Colleen Fitz-Gerald is fighting the toughest battle of all—her life.

Colleen, a devoted wife to Todd Fitz-Gerald and a loving mother to Devin and Hunter, continues her courageous fight against brain cancer. She remains in ongoing treatment, supported by around-the-clock nursing care. Through it all, baseball has become a source of strength and comfort as she watches her sons chase their dreams on the field.

Hunter Fitz-Gerald, known by some as “Homer Fitz-Gerald,” has put together an impressive season with the Arkansas Travelers at the Double-A level. In just 96 at-bats, he has hit seven home runs, driven in 21 runs, and stolen six bases. Since graduating in 2019, Hunter has accumulated 22 home runs and 120 RBIs in his minor league career.

His brother Devin Fitz-Gerald, a four-time state champion in high school, is also making a name for himself in his first full professional season. Currently batting .293 with the Wilmington Blue Rocks at the High-A level, Devin has hit three home runs this season, bringing his career total to nine, along with 36 RBIs and 18 stolen bases. His performance recently earned him a spot on Baseball America’s Top 10 hottest MLB prospects list.

Meanwhile, Coach Fitz-Gerald is on the verge of history. Just four wins away from securing his sixth consecutive state championship, his team—ranked among the nation’s best—has already captured another district title. They are now set to compete for a regional championship beginning Friday, May 8, against West Broward High School.

Through adversity and achievement, the Fitz-Gerald family continues to show remarkable strength, unity, and perseverance—on and off the field. A GoFundMe campaign remains open to help support the family as they continue this fight.
