Marjory Stoneman Douglas’ Todd Fitz-Gerald continues to add to his Hall-of-Fame career with his record-setting fifth Florida Dairy Coach of the Year Award.
Fitz-Gerald is coming off the team’s fifth straight State Championship this spring and seventh of his career. He credits his coaches and said that without them, this award wouldn’t have happened.
“I have the best coaching staff in the country,” Fitz-Gerald said. “We all have the same goals, and we work tirelessly to make these kids the best they can be.”
This past season, the Eagles went 31-2, with 10 of those wins coming in the playoffs, a best-of-three series at Regionals. They then went on to win 5-0 and 3-2 at the State Championship.
As a team, the Eagles hit .323 and homered 25 times. They outscored their opponents 241-60 while their pitching staff worked to a 1.50 ERA against one of the toughest schedules in the country. His top pitcher, Gio Rojas, was also named Gatorade and Florida Dairy Player of the Year and is a University of Miami Commit.
Fitz-Gerald’s success extends to both the collegiate and professional levels. He currently has 11 seniors from this year’s team signed to compete collegiately, joining dozens of graduates. Those seniors are Luke Cherry (University of North Florida), Erick Torres (Eastern Kentucky University), Bennett Gary (University of Miami), Breylynn Courtney, (Eastern Florida State, Drew Freeman (University of Louisville), Nick Diaz (University of Charleston). Carter Wojcik (La Salle University), Andrew Sarro (Eastern Florida State), and Daniel Tartaglia (Hillsborough Community College).
Fitz-Gerald also has had two former players, Coby Mayo and Roman Anthony, make their major league debuts in the last two years, while several players were recently drafted, including Hunter Fitz-Gerald, Devin Fitz-Gerald, and Jayden Dubanewicz.
