Update: Due to the weather, the demolition has been changed to Friday.
The demolition of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s 1200 building – the site of the 2018 mass shooting that killed 17 students and teachers – is scheduled to begin Thursday.
The demolition, which will be done with machines rather than explosives, is expected to take several weeks to complete. According to Broward County Public Schools, family members, and dignitaries will have a designated viewing area on school grounds during the event.
Survivors of the shooting, families of victims, and teachers and staff have had any items they wanted from the building returned to them, district officials said.
“This will be a difficult time for the families and friends of those who were killed and injured, and for the entire community,” BCPS said in a press release Tuesday.
The demolition will involve dismantling the building in pieces, beginning with the top floor. In preparation for the tear-down, crews have cleaned and cleared the building while adhering to state and federal landfill disposal regulations, officials said.
The decision to demolish the building came after officials preserved it as a crime scene for several years during the trials of the shooter and former Broward Sheriff’s Office school resource officer Scot Peterson.
