Hunter Fitz-Gerald has experienced plenty of memorable moments throughout his baseball career, but the 2026 season carried extra meaning as he put together the best offensive year of his professional career.
“This season turned out to be a great and really fun year,” Hunter said. “I was surrounded by a lot of great people every day, and they made every single day fun and enjoyable.”
Hunter, a 2019 graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, had a career year with the Arkansas Travelers, hitting 29 home runs and driving in 100 runs while scoring 82 times and stealing 14 bases. His performance also earned him All-Star recognition at first base.
After appearing in 12 professional games in 2023 and completing three full minor-league seasons, Hunter has recorded 44 career home runs and 199 RBIs.
While Hunter enjoyed tremendous success on the field, one of the most difficult parts of the season was being away from home while his mother battled cancer. Despite the distance, the family remained close throughout the year and spoke regularly.
“It was for sure hard to be away from the family,” Hunter said. “We did a great job throughout the year communicating and staying in touch and being able to talk every day. There’s a lot of people in our community that share their support with us, and I’m super grateful for that.”
His mother watched his games on television throughout the season, and the two talked about his performances the following day. Those conversations provided Hunter with extra motivation during his career-best season.
“I know how proud she was of me this season, and that alone made the whole year for me,” Hunter said. “I’m excited to be home now with my family and take some time off from baseball and enjoy my time back home with everyone.”
Hunter was not the only member of the Fitz-Gerald family to find success on the baseball field in 2026. Colleen’s husband, Todd Fitz-Gerald, led the Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team to its sixth consecutive state Championship, while their son Devin Fitz-Gerald continued his rapid rise through professional baseball.
After winning four state championships at MSD, Devin was selected in the fifth round of the 2024 MLB Draft before eventually joining the Washington Nationals organization.
Devin began the 2026 season in Single-A, hitting 12 home runs and driving in 37 runs before earning a promotion to Double-A. He continued to produce following the move, adding eight home runs and 30 RBIs.
Through his first three professional seasons, Devin has recorded 26 home runs and 87 RBIs as he continues his climb toward the major leagues.
