The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School baseball team continued its historic dynasty on Saturday, capturing a sixth consecutive State Championship with a statement victory over the nation’s top-ranked team, Venice High School.
The title run added another chapter to one of the most dominant stretches in high school baseball history, but this season may have been the program’s most emotional yet. The Eagles battled through several key injuries during the year while also rallying around a coach and his family as his wife continues her battle with cancer. Still, MSD managed to navigate one of the toughest schedules in the country, capping it off with a 2-1 victory.
” I think we submitted our legacy in stone, Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald said. “I couldn’t be prouder of these guys. Every team is different and this is how they wanted to leave their legacy.”
Gio Rojas got the ball and was dominant once again, but also responsible for the first run after plating a run on a bunt single. On the mound, he tossed three hitless innings before working his way out of trouble in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
“I gave I all I had, every batter, every pitch,” Rojas said. “Especially with the team I have behind me, I got the trust to pitch to contact and let them work as well. I know were capable of paying ball and be those ball players were train to be everyday. “
The Eagles tacked on a second run at the top of the seventh with Ander Elorriaga converting a suicide squeeze with two strikes on him to plate Jake Rizzo.
Nearing his 105 pitch limit, Rojas was able to start the seventh with 98 pitches and got a strikeout to start the inning and lineup for the second out before Ben Bianchi came in to pitch, and despite giving up a home run to the first batter he faced, struck out the next one to secure the win.
“I felt great in the pen, and seeing Gio out there dominating just gave me motivation to close it out for six,” Bianchi said.
The Eagles finished the season 28–6, capturing District, Regional, and State Titles along the way. The win added to an extraordinary run, as they now sit at 146–12 over a dynasty stretch that has produced dozens of collegiate and professional athletes. This year’s senior class was especially decorated, with 11 of 12 seniors already signed to play at the collegiate level, while Rojas projects as a potential first-round pick in this year’s MLB Draft.
