Broward County School Board member Lori Alhadeff on Monday said she would not seek reelection and endorsed Sharry Kimmel, a senior professor at Broward College, to succeed her.
In a video posted on her Facebook page, Alhadeff said that after nearly eight years on the school board, “it’s time for me now to do something more nationally for school safety.”
“I am so proud to endorse Dr. Sharry Kimmel to be the next school board member for District Four,” said Alhadeff, a Parkland resident.
A former teacher and mother of three, Alhadeff became a school safety advocate after her 14-year-old daughter Alyssa was killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on Feb. 14, 2018. She was first elected to the school board in 2018 and was twice elected by her fellow members to serve as chair.
Alhadeff represents District 4, which spans Coral Springs, Parkland, Tamarac, and parts of Margate and North Lauderdale.
She is the co-founder and president of Make Our Schools Safe, a non-profit focused on improving school security nationwide. The organization has helped bolster security at schools across the U.S., including through Alhadeff’s lobbying for Alyssa’s Law—a package of school safety improvements state legislators have passed into law in 10 U.S. states.
Alhadeff introduced Kimmel in Monday’s Facebook video and asked her supporters to back the professor.
“Mrs. Alhadeff, thank you for all that you have done for children and families in Broward,” Kimmel said. “I plan on carrying the torch for school safety that you have carried so eloquently for so long. That is a priority, as well as keeping the best teachers in Broward.”
Fluent in Spanish, Kimmel earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Florida, her master’s degree from the University of Miami, and her doctorate from Nova Southeastern University, according to her LinkedIn page.
Kimmel, through her work as a professor in the education department at Broward College, said she’s been “trying for 22 years to prepare the best of the best for Broward County.”
“Now,” she added, “I will have the ability to do so at a much higher level, and I cannot wait.”
Kimmel also said she would prioritize fiscal responsibility for the school board.
The board consists of nine members serving four-year terms. Three members, including Alhadeff, will have their terms end later this year.
