Parkland city commissioners on Wednesday unanimously approved demolition of the former Heron Bay Golf Course clubhouse following a fire that caused substantial damage to the structure in late December.
Commissioners awarded the contract to So Cal Shaker Plates and Construction Site Services as the lowest responsive bidder for the job. The contract allows for an annual amount of up to $185,150 to demolish the long-vacant building at 11801 Heron Bay Blvd., which sits on property that will eventually be home to a new Life Time Fitness club
Christine Garcia, Parkland’s senior director of operational services and projects, told commissioners the city issued the invitation to bid after the clubhouse sustained significant fire damage in the Dec. 27 blaze that was eventually put out by the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department. The roof of the structure collapsed, and the rest of the property suffered extensive damage, leading officials to deem the former clubhouse a safety hazard.
During Wednesday’s meeting, Vice Mayor Simeon Brier asked Garcia to address concerns raised by residents about lighting at the property.
Garcia said that because of the extent of the fire damage, Florida Power & Light had removed its electric meter from the building, leaving the site without power.
“The city did move forward with purchasing some lights that are solar-powered and trying to help offset some of that,” Garcia said.
City officials said they will work with the city of Coral Springs to expedite the demolition permit process.
“Once this gets approved tonight, we’ll go ahead and move forward with execution of the contract and immediately start in with the permits,” Garcia said, adding that once permits are approved, the demolition should take about 30 days to complete.
