The Marjory Stoneman Douglas boys basketball team has qualified for Regionals.
Not only are they the sixth seed in the region, but they will get a chance for a rematch again Deerfield Beach High School after falling by one point in the District Championship on Feb. 10.
“To get go back and play Deerfield again is exactly what we hoped for,” said Head Coach Teddy Lyons. “You wouldn’t want to run away from one of the teams that has been an owner in the District for a long time. If you want to be the best, you got to beat the best. We want to play them and look forward to the challenge.”
The Eagles head into their Regional Game with a record of 19-7 and went 17-8 during the regular season, which featured wins in showcases against Westwood Christian High School, Pembroke Pines Charter, and St. Brendan High School.
They also defeated District Champion North Broward Prep and several teams with winning records. MSD also qualified for the Big-8 Tournament before knocking off Spanish River and Park Vista Community High School in the District Tournament.
Lyons also says this has been a plan since he took over. Despite some obstacles at the start, they feel like they are where they need to be to break through to the State Championships.
“We didn’t meet every goal we had in the season, but the great part about it is the basketball gods have still given us a chance to meet the big goal,” Lyons said.” It’s a special thing to get here, but getting here is not enough, and we want to win.”
Tip-off for this game is set for Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. at Deerfield Beach High School.
