Hard work and effort paid off big for the female Marjory Stoneman Douglas Eagle Battalion cadets at the Raider District Championship meet on November 1. The Eagle Battalion hosted the competition.
They earned first place overall in the competition and will compete in the state championship in two weeks in Hillsborough County. The female Eagles competed among a group of strong JROTC programs.
“Our team worked very hard during the fall to prepare for this competition,” said Ava Selby, a major in the Eagles Battalion.
The Eagles Battalion males placed third, and the Junior Varsity division placed third. Team members also earned awards in various JROTC Raiders categories. While it was a significant accomplishment, they did not qualify for the state competition.
The JROTC cadets faced significant physical and mental challenges during the day. All participants had to complete a 5K (3.1-mile) run in the morning. Then, members participated in various military challenges based on their strengths and talents.
Events included the rope challenge, where the cadets built a rope bridge and crossed it. There was the cross-country challenge, where cadets had to show they could move an injured person to a helicopter for evacuation. The competition included a demanding obstacle course.
“I am very proud of our cadets. They worked very hard to achieve their success,” said Lieutenant Colonel Mark Anders.
After the awards were handed out, Anders complimented the cadets and told the female cadets they would have to work hard to prepare for the upcoming state competition.
