With the vast array of social media apps, it’s hard for Parkland parents to keep up with what is happening online to their teens.
One mother went undercover as a teen and an 11-year-old girl to expose the dangers facing kids on social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and Kik.
Left unsupervised, young children can be exposed to online predators, grooming, and psychological abuse within minutes. Roo Powell, 37, leads the Special Projects Team at Bark, a smart tool that parents can use to help protect their children online.
In the video, their team created a persona of Libby and Bailey.: a 15-year-old and an 11-year-old. They used photoshop and special effects to make Powell appear those ages in the video.
Within minutes of creating the personas, men were texting and sexting with graphic messages and images.
Throughout her career, Powell has been committed to human rights work, and she has covered the sex trafficking industry extensively. As Special Projects Lead, Roo oversees the team’s day-to-day operations, develops strategies for communicating with predators, and coordinates with law enforcement when illegal activities occur.
