The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School swim team is doing very well at midseason.
The Eagles defeated J.P. Taravella in competition at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex on September 17. The team is preparing for the upcoming BCAA, district, and regional meets. Most of the Eagles swimmers compete on club teams throughout the year.
Christian Nichols is one of the leading swimmers on the Eagles boys’ team. A senior, he has competed all four years and also plays water polo. He has competed in the 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 200 individual medley, and 100 backstroke while maintaining a 4.3 grade average. Nichols enjoys studying astronomy.
Last year, Nichols qualified for the regional meet, and he hopes to return and qualify for the state championship.
“I have put in many hours of training, and I want the team to do well. Being a good swimmer is as much mental as it is physical,” he said.
The Eagles girls’ swimmers are also doing well. Nikki Harrypersad, a sophomore, is excelling in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. She is also part of the Trinidad and Tobago national swim team. “I love swimming, and I believe it is fun. I would love to qualify for a world championship and swim in college at the division one level,” she said.
Alexa Anthony, a junior, has been on the team for three years and has been successful in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle. “I like to swim and work toward getting better,” she said.
Carly Chin, also a junior, is a three-year team member and has excelled in the 100 freestyle and 50 freestyle events. “I want to be the best swimmer I can be,” she said.
Coach Lauren Rubenstein is pleased with the Eagles’ swimmers and said that if the team members continue to train hard, they will do well in the upcoming district and regional meets.
