As local high school seniors prepare for college, it is essential to be aware of the resources available that may help offset those costs.
The City of Parkland has three separate scholarship opportunities for seniors to be used for postsecondary school-related expenses. All interested students must live in Parkland and be graduating in 2020.
The Community Advisory Board Scholarship provides up to $1,000, depending on the number of recipients, and recognizes students with outstanding community or civic service hours above the 40 minimum required.
Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5, provide a completed application, a high school transcript, and two letters of recommendation: one from a guidance counselor or a teacher and another from someone who has worked with them on a community project. Additional requirements are an essay of 250 words or less and a brief description of their community involvement with details of their community service project(s). The Allstate Foundation Scholarship in recognition and remembrance of the lives lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School seeks to provide two $500 scholarships to students who share the interests and passions of the students whose lives were cut short on February 14.
These interests include the fine arts, including music, dance, all forms of the arts, sports, and JROTC. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and be graduating from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Students must provide an essay explaining how the shared interest has influenced their life, past, present, and future. View the Allstate Foundation Scholarship application here.
A $3,000 Engineering scholarship will be awarded to a senior who is pursuing a career in civil engineering, surveying or a related field. This scholarship was established by The City of Parkland, Unger Engineering Services Inc. and Winningham and Fradley Inc., who believe in the development of the next generation of engineers.
In addition to the application, students must provide two letters of recommendation and an essay of 300 words or less about “The relevance of Civil Engineering and Surveying in today’s society.” View the Engineering Scholarship application here.
All the above scholarship applications must be turned in to the City of Parkland, located at 6600 University Drive, by Friday, February 7, at 4:00 p.m.
