Less than a month after the high school baseball season ended, the Original Florida Pokers had several teams in action to begin the summer.
The 13u team, led by Marjory Stoneman Douglas Assistant Coach Mike Sandoval, dropped its first game in pool play before winning its final four games off their Peerfect Game World Series Championship. The Pokers outscored their opponents 25-7 in the four victories, including a 9-1 win in the Championship Game.
“I’m really happy for the boys,” Sandoval said. “This is the second tournament they’ve won in the 14U category as a 13U team, which is a great accomplishment. I can’t wait to see what else they do in the upcoming National Tournaments.
Their team consists of Luca Broadhead, Mathius Carrasquel, Nico Dibella, Noah Feldman, Justyn Halaoui, Ethan Labott, Giovanni Monserrate, Gustavo Morillo, Ricardo Moros, Brady Mudlin, Peyton Mutinsky, EJ Quigley, Sebastian Rincoln and Johan Valbuena.
The 15U team went 3-2 and outscored their opponents 35-1 in their wins. Jorge Kau, Matthew Berger, and Griffin Haynes recorded victories on the mound, while Nolan Mianowskini had a pair of games where he drove in four runs. The Pokers also had two other teams go 2-2 and get ready for more baseball this summer before the 14U team won the Perfect Game World Series Championship. They went 4-0 and outscored their opponent 35-7 with two shutouts. The 10U team also won a championship in the USSSA Stars Battle.
The 16U is now 8-0-1 this year. They recently played in a tournament and won three games. Cade Raley currently leads the team with a .476 batting average, while Jake Rizzo is batting .444. Blake Sundberg has the team’s lone home run, while Nicholas Raber, Sundberg, Rodney Chung, and Jaden Doverspike are all hitting over .300. The Pokers have dominated on the mound with a 1.52 era. They have also stuck out 44 through their first nine games.
The 17U team went 4-0 in pool play, outscoring their opponents 42-7. Breylynn Courtney, Jose Torres, Daniel Tartaglia, and Jonathan Lopez recorded wins while scoring five triples offensively. Everett Marshall produced two, while Nick Diaz, Bennett Gary, and Cole Lasher had one. The Pokers fell 5-2 in their first game of bracket play on May 26. They then went on to go 3-0 in the Palm Beach World Series Finals and then recorded a win in the 17U National Championship featuring the top teams in the country. The Pokers also went on to win six games in the Blackbear Tournament in North Carolina before falling by a run in the final.
