State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky is highlighting a Democratic victory in neighboring Palm Beach County after Emily Gregory won election to Florida House District 87, flipping the seat into Democratic control.
The district includes Palm Beach, home to President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, giving the race added national attention even as local economic concerns dominated the campaign.
Hunschofsky, a Parkland resident and Democrat who is set to lead the Florida House Democratic Caucus, praised Gregory’s campaign and said the result reflects voter demand for action on rising costs.
“We are incredibly proud of the strong, disciplined campaign that Emily Gregory ran from start to finish,” Hunschofsky said in a statement. “Emily proved that Floridians are ready for change and ready for leaders who will focus on delivering real results that help bring down everyday costs for working families.”
Gregory, who was raised in Stuart, will enter the Legislature with a background in public health and small business. She earned a degree in health and exercise science from Wake Forest University and a master’s degree in public health from Columbia University, focusing on health policy and management. She has worked in public and mental health services and is also a mother of three, a military spouse, and a small business owner.
Florida House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell said Gregory’s campaign centered on affordability issues that continue to weigh on residents across the state.
“Floridians have made it clear they want real action on the affordability crisis,” Driskell said.
House District 87 covers parts of central and eastern Palm Beach County, including coastal communities and inland neighborhoods.
Hunschofsky said that Gregory will join the caucus at a pivotal moment, as lawmakers prepare for upcoming special sessions on redistricting and the state budget.
Gregory defeated Trump-endorsed Republican Jon Maples in the special election held to fill a vacancy created when former state Rep. Mike Caruso resigned to run for Palm Beach County supervisor of elections.
The seat will be back on the ballot in the November 2026 general election.
