A Message from Mayor Rich Walker
Around this time of year, we often get inundated with versions and interpretations of family. Family is a concept that hits hard around the holidays, as we are faced with travel plans, having college kids back in town, and dinners that bring us together – or not.
If you are looking for ways to cut through some of the stress, think about your definition of family and how that definition can bring you joy – and peace. With the heightened anxieties the holidays and the end of the year bring, it is helpful to put everything into perspective and think of the people – or situations – who calm you and let that be your guide as you navigate the holiday season.
Sure, at times you may need to be an adult and pay a few obligatory visits you are not passionate about. But make a point to find the people – and creatures – who move you – and surround yourself with them. A cousin? Spending time as a volunteer? Taking the dog for a quiet walk? That may be your version of family – the people and environments that allow you to take a deep breath and bring you peace.
If you want to visit an old friend across town or across the country, because that feels like family – do it. If you want to sit in the living room in your pjs and binge-watch cartoons with your kids – do that. If you want to cuddle on the floor with your pets – you can do that too.
This is the season of comfort – the comfort you share with others, but also the comfort you can create for yourself. Remember, you must take care of yourself in order to take care of your family, and finding our true definition of family is up to us.
If we stop to weigh in on what is realistic – and what really matters – this last month of 2025 could be a much easier lift, in terms of stress.
Chaos and unnecessary drama and stress? Leave all that behind. Be well, get in your comfort zone, and value your family – your definition of family – throughout the holiday season.
