Authorities have identified the man found dead inside a car submerged in a Parkland canal Monday.
Dilton Florezel Lai, 51, of Fort Lauderdale, was discovered after authorities received a report of a vehicle in a canal near the intersection of Pine Island Road and Nob Hill Road around 11 a.m. Monday, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
The Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department, BSO deputies, and the agency’s dive team responded to the scene and spotted a fully submerged 2021 Honda Accord in the canal behind a residential community.
BSO divers located the Accord with Lai inside and pulled him and the car out of the canal, according to BSO.
A preliminary investigation, led by BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit, revealed that Lai was driving northwest on Pine Island Road early Monday morning when he failed to stop at the T-shaped intersection at Nob Hill Road, authorities said.
“For unknown reasons, Lai drove over the raised curb, into the grass, and launched over and into the canal,” BSO said in a press release Wednesday.
The Accord was spotted later Monday morning, authorities said.
The crash remained under investigation Wednesday.
