The Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team is beginning to get hot, while a former player had a milestone in college.
Despite coming into the week having lost two of three and falling to second in the country, the Eagles knocked off undefeated Monsignor Pace 9-1 in their game on March 25.
Gio Rojas made the start but departed in the second inning before Breylynn Courtney came in and tossed 4.2 scoreless innings in his best outing with MSD. The Eagles scored four runs in the first, three in the third, and two in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run home run from Devin Fitz-Gerald. He finished with three RBIs, while Gavin Gargiulo also knocked in two. Rylan Lujo, Niko Benestad, and Nick Diaz also drove in runs, with Brayden McCluskey recording the final three outs.
The Eagles then beat Cardinal Gibbons High School 6-0 behind a well-pitched game from Jayden Dubandewicz. He pitched six innings and allowed only three hits before Peyton Jay pitched the seventh. Lujo had two doubles and knocked in two, while Benestad, Diaz, and Cade Raley all had RBIs.
However, MSD fell for just the third time this year against Park Vista on Thursday 8-2. Gavin Gargiulo struggled despite the Eagles scoring a run in the first and second innings. Marjory Stoneman Douglas graduate Matt Ossenfort had a memorable first collegiate hit, hitting a 403-foot home run on Tuesday for Vanderbilt University.
The Eagles responded with a 4-1 win over American Heritage on Monday behind another strong outing from Dubanewicz. He struck out 11 before Courtney earned the save, with Lujo leading the way with two RBIs. Fitz-Gerald and Raley also drove inruns.
Ossenfort, a 2023 graduate and State Champion, knocked in two of the three runs during their 3-2 victory against Valparaiso. He was making his first start of the season and had two previous at-bats this year. However, Ossenfort is no stranger to the long ball, as he hit ten during his senior year with MSD, 25 RBIs and a .393 batting average.
