Coby Mayo’s first professional home run may not have come the traditional way, but it all counts as he homers for the first time in the big leagues on Friday night against the Tampa Bay Rays.
With the Orioles leading 20-8 against the Tampa Bay Rays, Mayo recorded his first major league home run off a position player, José Caballero, in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The 2020 graduate from MSD came into the game with four RBIs and doubled his total following a four-RBI game. Mayo made his major league debut with the Orioles in 2024 and had his first big league hit against DJ Herz of the Washington Nationals.
Mayo hit 13 home runs while scoring 61 runs in high school before being picked in the fourth round of the MLB Draft. In 1600 Minor League at-bats, Mayo has homered 90 times and has recorded 13 hits this season playing with the Orioles.
