Rojas Launches 2 Home Runs to Lift MSD Baseball; 3 Graduates Make Season Debut in MLB

Marjory Stoneman Douglas delivered another standout week, highlighted by strong showings at the BCAA Championship, continued dominance on the tennis courts and a milestone performance in the pool.The Eagles competed at the BCAA Championship on Friday night at Fort Lauderdale High School, with several athletes turning in impressive results. On the girls side, Olympia Koumoutsakis placed seventh in the 1600 meters, while Sparta Koumoutsakis finished ninth in the same event. The duo also teamed up with Alexys Caropreso and Cecilia Gago in the 4x800 relay, where they placed seventh overall. Caropreso added a ninth-place finish in the 800 meters. Gago and Antonella Dominguez each placed just outside the top ten. coming in 13th. In the 4x100 relay, the team of Mya-Kay Phidd, Jaliyah Robinson, Oriana Pimental Rivas and Samantha DeGance finished 14th. For the boys team, Matthew Rosenberg was the lone competitor and placed 10th in the 3200 meters. The Eagles will now shift their focus to the postseason as they prepare for the district meet, aiming to advance to regionals and ultimately the state championship. The tennis teams have continued their impressive play, combining for a 17-4 record through their first 21 matches. The girls team is 10-1, with its only loss coming against Cypress Bay High School, and has won 67 of 74 individual matches this season. In water polo, the boys team rebounded from an 0-6 start to win six of its final eight regular-season games, finishing 6-8. Their most recent victory came in a 16-14 win over Cardinal Gibbons High School, powered by Benjamin Ruytenbeek’s 11 goals and three assists. He now has 97 goals on the season to lead the state as well as points with 125. Christian Nichols, is set to be honored on Monday for Senior Night along with Thomas Nguyen, has added 46 goals this year. With only two teams eligible for the District Tournament, the Eagles will play West Boca Raton Community High School in the Championship Game on April 8. The girls water polo team sits at 11-4 heading into its regular-season finale. Seniors Sienna Grayeli and Samantha Renna have helped lead the way, while Sadie Teteonsor paces the offense with 81 goals. She recently surpassed 200 career goals in a win over Cardinal Gibbons High School. Bella Schubow has added 51 goals, while Grayeli has 48 goals and a team-high 39 assists. Goaltender Maya Knapp ranks third in the state in goals agaisnt average. The Eagles are scheduled to close the regular season on Tuesday, April 2 against Spanish River Community High School. The Eagles will close the regular season with a matchup against SOnaish River Community High School on Thursday, April 2 at 7 p.m. MSD currently sits in first place in the District and will face either Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach or West Boca Raton Community High School in the in the opening round of the playoffs starting on Tuesday, April 7. Gio Rojas, a top MLB Draft prospect for his pitching, showcased a different side of his game Tuesday night—powering Marjory Stoneman Douglas to a 12-0 win over Coral Glades with a dominant performance at the plate.

Batting third, the senior wasted no time making an impact, launching a pair of three-run home runs in the first two innings, helping the Eagles surge out to an early 7-0 lead. Reid Dadic contributed both at the plate and on the mound, recording an RBI double, while Lorenzo Laurel, Sean Torres, and Angel Rodriguez each drove in runs to support the offensive outburst.

On the mound, Dadic delivered four shutout innings, allowing just three hits. Drew Boivin followed with a scoreless fifth inning in his third appearance of the season to secure the shutout.

With the win, MSD improved to 17-5 on the year. The Eagles will close out the regular season with two more games, beginning against Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School on Tuesday, April 7, at 3:30 p.m. They will then host Senior Night on Wednesday, April 8, against Key West High School at 6 p.m.

MSD also continues to make its mark at the next level, with three former players making their MLB debuts this season. Roman Anthony and Coby Mayo each earned spots on Opening Day rosters.

Anthony, coming off a strong performance in the World Baseball Classic, batted leadoff and went 3-for-4 against the Cincinnati Reds. Mayo, playing third base—the same position he held in high school—reached base with a walk against the Minnesota Twins, then recorded two hits and an RBI in his third game.

Meanwhile, Jesus Luzardo made his first start of the season for the Philadelphia Phillies. The left-hander, pitching in his first outing since signing a contract extension, struck out seven over six innings against the Texas Rangers despite taking the loss.
