Former Marjory Stoneman Douglas star Abbey Hsu will play for the Columbia University Lions in the NCAA Tournament for the first time.
The Lions were seeded 12th and will have to compete against 12th-seeded Vanderbilt in the play-in game to reach the round of 64. Columbia had a remarkable season, going 22-5 and also having a 13-1 record in conference play.
The Lions, though, lost in the final of the Ivy League Tournament, but they still earned an at-large bid for the first time in school history.
Hsu, who began her high school career at Marjory Stoneman Douglas before graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 2019, is averaging 20.6 points per game, currently ranking 20th in the nation. Hsu was named the Ivy League Player of the Year and set the school record for most Player of the Week awards. The senior eclipsed 2,000 career points in the team’s first-ever victory-ranked opponents in Princeton and has also made the Naismith Trophy Award Midesason Cut, which features 25 of the best college basketball players in the country.
Hsu is not the only local player on the Columbia team. North Broward Prep’s Riley Weiss is playing in her freshman season and has averaged 8.5 points per game. Tip-off for this game is set for Wednesday, March 20, at 9 p.m. The winner will play fifth-seeded Baylor in Round 64.
