The postseason ramped up this weekend as one soccer team led the way, advancing to the Regional Final, and two wrestlers won a BCAA Championship.
The girls soccer team began Regionals following a win over Doral Academy in penalty kicks during the Regional Quarterfinals. The game was tied at zero after double overtime. Still, they went on to win 4-3 in penalty kicks behind goals from Sophia Dal Molin, Alexa Jourdan, Courtney Heymach, and Emma McGregor.
MSD then recorded a 2-0 win over Wellington High School in the Semifinals. Emma McGregor scored on a free kick, and as the game ended in the final minute, Alexa Jourdan scored on an assist from Alessia Frenquellucci. The Eagles outscored their opponents 9-0 during the District Tournament and are currently 10-1-6 this year. The Eagles also rank 13th in the state and 16th nationally. They will play Cypress Bay High School in the Regional Final on Wednesday, February 12, at 6 p.m.
The Lightning are seeded second in Regionals and went 16–1-1 this year, with their only loss coming against MSD on November 13. They won their District Tournament and also beat Boca Raton and Miami Palmetto Senior High School in their first two games in Regionals.
The boys soccer team entered the Regional Championship as the top seed and recorded a 3-2 win over Leonard High School. Aquliles Yiribin has two goals, while Luis Delgado also had one. Elon Jan Saranga and Lucca Novaes added assists. However, they were knocked out in penalty kicks in the Regional Semifinals.
The game was tied at one through two overtimes, but MSD fell 3-2 in penalty kicks. During the regular season, the Eagles went 9-2-2 before beating Spanish River and Boca Raton Community High School in the District Tournament. Their seniors this year are Sebastian Mira, Robert Heffner, Nolan Alba, Coby Alhadeff, Shayan Noor, Keanu Nguyen, Elon Jon Saranaga, and Jonah Burke.
The boys basketball team beat Spanish River Community High School 67-39 following 17 points from Brady Kuebler. Nirel Earley also was in double figures with 14, while Jacob Rayvis added 10. Zack Story also had seven points and 12 rebounds before the Eagles lost 63-59 against Park Vista Community High School in the Semifinals. The Eagles finished the season 10-13 and will have Brady Kuebler, Ayden Mclean, Jason Ortiz, Noam Refaeli, and Justin Jaimes all graduate this year.
The girls basketball team beat Spanish River Community High School in their opening playoff game before falling to top-seeded Park Vista Community High School 71-55. The Eagles finished the season 11-9 and will have Riley Mcleary and Naomi Grissette graduate this year.
In wrestling, the Eagles competed in the BCAA Championship and had Rocco Duygulu and David Leiva take first place. Bryce Siddens finished in fourth place, along with Jackson Zajkowski, while Jacob Balk placed fifth. Keegan Lake and Lucas Siqueira came in sixth with 6th place, with Arav Chintre placing seventh.
As a team, MSD came in sixth place, while the girls finished second. Arianna Blanc came in first, while Aniyha Smith, Emily Balk, Addison McMahon, and Haasini Vattikutti placed second. Veronika Kushnir, Linda Fisil, and McKayla Sugrano finished third, followed by Kaylee Barthe
