The Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team knocked out another team that won a State Championship last season after winning against Cardinal Gibbons High School on Tuesday.
“Kids have worked really hard on simplifying things offensively and not trying to do too much,” Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald said. ” Approaches at the plate have been much better, and we’ve done a good job fouling off tough pitchers’ pitches. Pitchers continue to give us quality innings, making big pitches when they need to with runners on base.”
The Eagles won 15-7 behind four RBIs from Lorenzo Laurel. He also had a home run, while Bennett Gary also homered for the Eagles and drove in three. Jake Rizzo finished the game 4-5 with four RBIS, while Nick Diaz and Gio Rojas also had RBIs.
Danny Tartaglia made the start and earned the win after pitching four innings. He allowed three earned runs and struck out six before Breylynn Courtney pitched two scoreless innings, and Andrew Sarro got the last three outs.
MSD scored a pair of runs in the first, second, fourth, and seventh innings while scoring seven in the sixth. The Eagles, currently ranked 20th in the nation and seventh in Florida, will be back in action on Wednesday, March 12, for a game against Miller School of Albemarle, coached by Billy Wagner, a recent MLB Hall of Famer inductee.
MSD will close the week out with a matchup on Thursday, March 13, at 6 p.m. against Bishop Snyder High School, with both games being broadcast on Perfect Game TV.
