The Marjory Stoneman Douglas girls flag football team is making a statement to start the season, winning their first seven games dominantly.
Coming off their first District Championship since 2010, the Eagles tacked on two wins this week, outscoring their opponents 100-0 following wins against Fort Lauderdale and Cooper City High School.
MSD already had four shutouts earlier in the season against Olympic Heights, Coral Glades, McArthur, and Boyd H. Anderson High School while allowing only one touchdown in a 27-6 win over Boca Raton Community High School on February 26.
Samantha Calavetta has shined at quarterback this year, tossing 22 touchdown passes. She has yet to be intercepted and has thrown for 1,347 yards. The Eagles have 10 players who have caught a touchdown, led by Sophia Dal Molin, with six.
Courtney Heymach, Audrey Haltiwanger, and Ava Kelleher all have caught three, while Mickayla Sugrano and Daria Boykin have scored twice. Savannah Tenore, Caitlin Taylor, and Diana Doherty all have one, along with Calavetta, who caught it on a pass from Alina Caravello. Heymach has also added six rushing touchdowns.
Defensively, Taylor leads the team with 22 flags pulled and eight sacks, while Boykin, Doherty, Caravello, Jordan Tessler, and Haltiwanger have at least 10 while combining for 12 sacks. Tenore has a team-high six interceptions, as MSD has picked off 18 passes this year.
MSD is currently ranked in the top-25 in the nation and will have some time off before facing Monarch High School in their next game on Thursday, March 20, at 4 p.m. The Knights are 3-4 this year and lost 14-7 in their only matchups against the Eagles last season.
