The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School baseball team had a strong run in the Bishop Gorman High School Invitational, winning three games before falling in the final.
The Eagles opened by advancing through the winners’ bracket with a 10-5 victory over Centennial High School. Cade Raley powered the offense with a grand slam, while Gio Rojas also went deep.
Jake Rizzo, Ander Eloriagga, Abraham Halaoui, and Brody Gargiulo each contributed RBIs in a balanced attack. Reid Dadic got the start on the mound, while Tyler Stertzbach recorded eight key outs in relief before Ben Bianchi secured the win with a four-out save.
MSD then staged an impressive comeback against Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Trailing 6-1, the Eagles erupted for six runs in the fourth inning to take the lead and ultimately the win. Bianchi closed out his second straight game, while Lorenzo Laurel drove in three runs. Rizzo, Rojas, and Gargiulo each added an RBI.
In the semifinals, Rojas delivered a dominant performance on the mound against Bishop Verot High School, striking out 14 over six strong innings. The Eagles jumped ahead early with two runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 6-2 victory. Five different players recorded RBIs, and Drew Boivin returned to the mound with a scoreless inning to seal the win.
In the final, the Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead but quickly fell behind 3-1 an inning later. After getting one back in the fifth, Berkley Prep scored four runs to take a 7-2 lead and five more in the sixth to hand the MSD their fourth loss of the season. Stertzbach, though, did toss three scoreless innings in relief to continue his strong season.
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, March 24, against Cardinal Gibbons High School at 4 p.m. The Eagles will also host Charles W. Flanagan High School and travel to face Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in another busy week.
