Marjory Stoneman Douglas softball and flag football both recorded big victories this week, knocking off Coral Glades and picking up several more wins to close out the week, along with a first-place finish in track and field.
In softball, the Eagles earned a 5-3 win over the Jaguars after scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead. Mya Boleen had two RBIs in the game, while Camryn Ferro and Myah Boleen each drove in a run. Kaitlyn Enright tossed a complete game and struck out four to record the victory.
The Eagles followed that performance with a dominant 21-1 victory over McArthur High School. MSD scored nine runs in the first inning and added 10 more in the second in a game that lasted only three innings.
MSD then closed out the week with a 14-2 win over Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School. Enright had two triples and drove in five runs to lead the Eagles offensively. Next, the Eagles will play Pompano Beach High School on March 23 at 4:30 p.m.
In flag football, MSD also defeated Coral Glades in dominant fashion. The Eagles scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and added two more in the second on their way to a 27-0 victory. A.B. Puccio continued her incredible season, throwing four touchdown passes. She finished the game 20-for-30 for 231 yards. Caitlin Taylor, Courtney Heymach, Ava Kelleher, and Noa Rachimi all caught touchdown passes.
Defensively, the Eagles recorded seven sacks. Katie Diaz, Jordan Tessler, and Alina Carabello each had two sacks, while Mickayla Sugrano added one and also recorded an interception.
MSD then went on to defeat Piper High School 31-19 for the team’s ninth win of the season. Puccio threw five more touchdown passes, with Heymach catching two of them. Elayna Garzon, Elisabeth Garzon, and Kelleher each added a touchdown.
On defense, Diaz recorded four sacks while Haltiwanger added two interceptions. Next, the Eagles will play Pembroke Pines Charter on March 25 at 5 p.m.
Racing in Coral Springs for the BCAA Preliminaries, Jonathan Roditugez took first place in the long jump. Matthew Rosenberg and Avi Gabbay each placed second in their events, along with Sergio Lozano finishing fourth in the 400 hurdles. Kyle Pan and Caleb Walker each placed fourth in the 1600 meters and 3200 meters, respectively, while Jaidean Walcott, Austin Khayani, and Kyle Campbell finished fifth in events on the track.
The girls’ team featured Alexis Freckleton, who came in second in both the 800 meters and the high jump. Jaliyah Robinson finished third in the high jump, and Cecilia Gago placed fifth in the 800 meters.
