The Marjory Stoneman Douglas boys and girls lacrosse teams competed in the District Tournament.
While both teams won their first game to advance to the District Final, they fell in the Championship game. However, the girls’ team earned themselves a spot in Regionals after winning 11 games this year. They beat Park Vista High School in the District Semifinals 21-6 behind a historic performance from Taylor McGovern. She scored five goals to reach 70 on the season and added ten assists.
Chloe Resnick also scored five times and had an assist. Stephanie Bilsky recorded four goals, and Kaitlin Irwin had three. Raina Grimes, Caroline Lam, and Gracyn Hayes combined to score the final four goals in the team’s 11th win.
Despite falling behind early in the Championship Game, MSD fell by three goals as McGovern, Irwin, and Resnik all recorded hat-tricks. Raina Grimes and Bilks combined for three goals and an assist. They are set to play at Palmetto High School in the Regional Quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
“This season has been special in so many ways, and we’re not done yet,” Head Coach Scott Iardella. “We couldn’t be more excited and honored to advance to Regionals this year. Our team will be ready to give it our absolute best, and we’ll approach it as we have all season: one game at a time.”
The boys lacrosse team defeated West Boca Raton Community High School in the semifinals. Darren Edenbaum, who already broke the single-season scoring record and reached 100 goals for his career, led the team with seven of the team’s 22 goals. He added four assists before they eventually fell in the Championship Game against St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Preston Gerena also shined as well offensively. MSD finished the season with a record of 6-9 but fell short of qualifying as the eighth seed in Regionals.
