The drive for a sixth straight state championship has taken on deeper meaning this season, as the Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team rallies around one of its own.
Colleen Fitz-Gerald, wife of head coach Todd Fitz-Gerald, is currently battling brain cancer and continues her ongoing treatment. Her diagnosis has had a profound impact on the Eagles program. A GoFundMe was set up in December and remains open to help has over 600 donations. and raised nearly $109,000. Donations are still needed to help with the required healthcare along with treatments and therapies.
Coach Fitz-Gerald has had to balance leading his team with caring for his family, which has limited him primarily to coaching home games.
In his absence, the Eagles’ assistant coaches have stepped up in a major way, helping maintain the team’s high standard. The Fitz-Gerald family’s support system has extended beyond the high school level. Hunter Fitz-Gerald and Devin Fitz-Gerald, both professional baseball players, have been actively involved, helping care for their mother while also attending practices before heading to spring training, offering guidance and mentorship to the team.
Despite the challenges, MSD currently sits at 16-5 and ranked seventh in the state. The team recently traveled to Las Vegas to compete in the Bishop Gorman High School Invitational and won three games in one of the country’s premier tournaments before finishing this week with a apir of wins
