In an unprecedented move related to an ongoing civil case, a judge authorized a reenactment of the tragic event at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018.
The court-ordered reenactment is set for Friday, August 4, 2023, and has sparked a mix of emotions within the community.
The reenactment will be held on the school’s campus, specifically in the 1200 building, the main site of the 2018 tragedy. Broward County Public Schools clarified that they are not involved in organizing or controlling this event.
To maintain privacy and respect for the affected community, no media personnel will be granted access to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High campus during the reenactment. This decision underscores the sensitive nature of the event, aiming to prevent additional distress caused by media presence.
In a further step to minimize disruption, both Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and neighboring Westglades Middle School will be closed for the day. This includes all students, staff, and visitors.
Recognizing the potential emotional toll on the community, district, and school leadership are proactively communicating with families. All schools within the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High zone have been informed well before the reenactment. The objective is to give families ample time to make arrangements that best suit their needs on that day.
Support mechanisms are being put in place for those affected. The district has highlighted that mental health resources are available on their website, browardschools.com/mentalhealthservices, for anyone in need.
Moreover, the Eagles’ Haven Wellness Center is set to extend its operations from August 4 to August 6. This aims to provide a sanctuary for those requiring emotional support. In addition to counseling services, the center offers free wellness classes to help community members.
