The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School JROTC Raiders Team is charging forward this season, bringing home a collection of trophies.
Led by Senior Army Instructor LTC (Ret) Mark Anders, with assistance from Mr. Frank Pinzon, the program has assembled male, female, and mixed Raiders teams, each with 12 student-athletes.
The team captains are Anthony Pellito and Bruno Camillo for the Male Team, Isis Smith for the Female Team, and David Pena for the Mixed Team. The students tackle challenges designed to test their skills, strength, stamina, and teamwork.
JROTC competitions consist of five rigorous events: a kettlebell shuttle run (with two 30lb kettlebells), a five-kilometer team run, a tire flip over 100 meters, a cross-country rescue carrying a dummy-laden litter and weighted rucksacks for one mile, and building and crossing a one-rope bridge.
In a meet held at Everglades High School on October 19, the MSD Raiders teams competed against 14 other teams from a strong district. Each MSD team placed third overall, bringing home seven trophies across different events, an impressive outcome as the Raiders prepare for their upcoming challenges.
At the District Championships on October 26, the Female Team secured a second-place finish out of 15 teams, earning a spot in the upcoming State Championships. The Female Team aimed to defend their State Championship title, while the Male Team achieved an admirable third place. The combined efforts of all teams resulted in 11 trophies.
Since 2005, the program has been consistently recognized as an Honor Unit with Distinction. According to Anders, the program focuses on building character, leadership skills, and fitness in young people while emphasizing community service.
