Despite heavy rain throughout last week canceling several games, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas tennis teams, girls’ flag football team, and boys’ volleyball team could play.
The boys’ and girls’ tennis teams both won a District Championship with wins against Deerfield Beach High School. Dennis Oliveira also qualified for States in singles and doubles, along with his partner Danny Platovsky. Both teams then went on to Regionals, with the boys’ team beating Charles W. Flanagan High School and the girls defeating Western High School in the opening round.
The flag football team held Senior Night on April 11 before their 27-0 loss against Blache Ely High School. The Eagles honored Niyomi Hudson and Mia Beteta and have dominated the Coral Springs this year, defeating the Lady Colts of Coral Springs and J.P. Taravella. They also had a win via forfeit over Stranahan High School.
The Eagles entered the District Tournament as the sixth seed and fell 19-0 against Deerfield Beach High School. Quarterback Alina Caravello shined all year, throwing more than 800 passing yards. She also threw ten touchdown passes and added over 100 yards rushing with another score this season.
Sophia Dal Molin finished with six touchdown catches, while Savannah Tenore and Betera caught passes. Morgan Goldman shined all season defensively, leading the teams in flags pulled.
The boys’ volleyball team recorded their first win of the season against Coconut Creek High School in four sets. This was also the final home match for seniors Jason Nicholas and Patrick Collins. MSD will play two more regular season matches this year. They play Charles W. Flanagan High School on Wednesday, April 19, at 4:30 before facing South Broward High School on April 26 at 4:30 p.m.
