A young child was killed in a traffic accident last May in Coral Springs near the home of Sarah Morales.
“I did not know the girl, but it affected me. She never got to go to elementary school and live out her life because of an accident,” said Morales.
A resident of Parkland and a junior at Pine Crest School, she realized that many people her age knew little about safe driving. So, she created a program called Safe Drives Save Lives on Facebook and safedrives_savelives on Instagram.
“I am leading a program for driving safely to prevent future accidents,” said Morales, adding that she realized many kids need driving guidance and may not have money for driving classes.
Morales, 16, has earned her Florida driver’s license and drives around Parkland. “It is super important to focus on driving and be very careful,” she said.
Morales established a relationship with the Coconut Creek Police Department and posted photos of her with the officers and visiting schools. She is working with CCPD to create a video on driving safety and advice on safe driving techniques from four police officers.
Morales plans to post the video during the week of October 20, which is also National Teen Driving Safety Week.
“I want to make the roads safer and educate teenagers on safe driving,” she said.
