Mark Weissman
Parkland is mourning the loss of former City Commissioner Mark Weissman, a longtime public servant whose years of leadership helped shape the community’s growth and character. He was 77.
Weissman first won election to the Parkland city commission in a 1996 special election, earning the support of residents drawn to his steady approach to local governance. He was re-elected in 1998 and served through 2000 before taking his public service to the state level.
In 2000, Weissman was elected as a Democrat to the Florida House of Representatives, where he represented his district and expanded his commitment to public service beyond the city he called home.
He later returned to Parkland civic life, winning election again to the city commission in 2006. Weissman served a decade in that role, continuing until 2016, when he moved away from the city. Over the course of his tenure, colleagues and residents alike came to know him as a thoughtful, engaged leader with a deep investment in the well-being of Parkland families.
Among the projects he helped bring to life was Veterans Park on Holmberg Road, adjacent to the Parkland Library. Those who worked with him during that effort recalled his hands-on involvement and personal commitment to honoring veterans and their families.
“I had the privilege of working closely together with Commissioner Weissman around 2015–16 to bring Veterans Park on Holmberg, by the library, to life,” Beth Agami, mother of war hero U.S. Army Spc. Daniel Agami, said on social. “His genuine care and unwavering support for Gold Star Families like ours, as well as Parkland veterans and their loved ones, were evident in every step of the process. He was truly committed to making the park a reality, and his impact will not be forgotten.”
Weissman’s legacy extended beyond public office. In a heartfelt tribute posted on Facebook, his son Samuel remembered him as a devoted father and larger-than-life presence whose warmth and humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
“He leaves a legacy of family and life-long friendships where the overflowing love for him was evident to even the casual observer,” his son wrote. “He was larger than life to me and so many others. His sense of humor was legendary among all that knew him… The truth is, no amount of time would be enough. But the love is eternal. I love you, Dad.”
A cause of death was not immediately announced.
