North Broward Preparatory School cross-country coach Jon Volpi was looking forward to running the 5-mile run in the Parkland Dash on October 12 at Pine Trails Park.
Volpe won the male division of the race, and while running, he had the opportunity to coach some of his top runners. The dash was an out-and-back course. As he was returning, he saw some of his runners participating in the 5K (3.1-mile) race, also an out-and-back event, and set a competitive pace for them. Levi Bekker, a North Broward Prep cross-country runner, won the male division of the 5K run, and his teammate Ari Arbel earned second place.
“It was a great run, and I was glad to help the runners on my team do well,” said Volpi. His assistant coach, Raimond DiEgidio, and Nicole Paciorek, a science teacher at North Broward Prep, also participated in the dash.
“This was a nice run and I was glad to win the 5K,” said Bekker.
About 700 runners of various talent and experience levels participated in the dash, which included a one-mile fun run, a 5K, and a 5-mile run. Some of the runners were highly competitive athletes, while others participated as family and friend groups, running at a slower pace.
Most of the runners enjoyed the experience. “This was a fun run and I felt great when I was running,” said Alexander Dwort, first-place winner in the male 5K age 20 to 24 category.
Carlos Davila, the second-place winner in the male 25 to 29 category of the 5 K, enjoyed the experience and expressed his gratitude for winning an award.
The event began with warm-up exercises, and after the run, many stayed and enjoyed a social event complete with refreshments.
