Broward Circuit Court Judge Ari Abraham Porth has been honored with the prestigious 2024 Chief Justice Award for Judicial Excellence by Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Carlos Muñiz.
This statewide award is given annually to two judges—one from the circuit court and one from the county court—who exemplify outstanding service and dedication to the judiciary.
Porth, a Parkland resident, currently presides over the Felony Mental Health division in the 17th Judicial Circuit, where his work has significantly impacted rehabilitation and recovery for individuals with mental illness.
Chief Justice Muñiz announced the award last week, recognizing Porth for his “personification of judicial excellence” and “exceptional commitment to the judicial branch.”
“I am grateful and overwhelmed,” Porth said after receiving the honor.
Sworn into the 17th Judicial Circuit in January 2013, he shared that this award reflects the hard work of the entire Felony Mental Health Court team.
“We work collaboratively to find resources for those in need while keeping the community’s safety always in mind. It is the greatest honor to be able to help people on their road to recovery,” Porth added.
The Chief Justice Award for Judicial Excellence, established in 2015, highlights judges whose work exceeds the typical expectations of the role. Recipients are noted for character, integrity, legal knowledge, sound judgment, compassion, and decisiveness.
Chief Judge of the 17th Judicial Circuit, Jack Tuter, praised Porth’s leadership and character:
“Judge Porth is a natural-born leader who exemplifies humility and wisdom in everything he does. He not only represents the 17th Judicial Circuit as a circuit court judge but also represents the people of Broward County and the citizens of the State of Florida as an impactful dignitary who remains grounded, regardless of his title.”
Before his judicial appointment, Porth served as a State Representative from 2004 to 2012, where he played a crucial role in passing important legislation, including measures to protect victims of domestic violence and increase penalties for crimes against the homeless.
His community involvement continues today. He chairs the 17th Judicial Circuit’s Mental Health Task Force and holds leadership positions on several boards, including the Florida Conference of Circuit Court Judges and the Area Agency on Aging.
Porth’s extensive contributions have earned him previous recognition from organizations such as the TJ Reddick Bar Association, the Florida School Social Worker Association, and the Florida Council on Crime and Delinquency.
A graduate of Northeastern University in Boston, Porth will be formally presented with the Chief Justice Award at the upcoming Florida Conference of Circuit Court Judges Annual Education Programs.
