On Wednesday, Parkland Mayor Christine Hunschofsky announced that Mayor Pete Buttigieg is endorsing her candidacy for the Florida House of Representatives in Northwest Broward’s District 96.
On top of this, Hunschofsky earned the backing of Buttigieg’s new political action committee, Win the Era, which seeks to elevate the Democratic Party’s next generation of leaders by supporting candidates in down-ballot races.
Hunschofsky volunteered on the former South Bend mayor’s campaign for the presidency, including at the 2020 Iowa Caucuses, which he won in February.
“Mayor Christine Hunschofsky is in it for the right reasons,” said Buttigieg. “Having guided her community of Parkland as it responded to unspeakable tragedy, she has a deep understanding of the fundamental humanity of politics and leadership at its best. Her on-the-ground perspective and personal empathy will make her an excellent legislator, and I’m proud to support her campaign for State Representative.”
“Mayor Pete’s support means the world to me,” she said and added his historic presidential campaign felt more like a movement, and it was guided by a set of values built on respect for every person and their unique life experience.
“He showed us what is possible when policy-making focuses on bringing people together to solve problems that affect our everyday lives,” she said.
Hunschofsky said that In Tallahassee, she’ll stand up for many of the same issues Pete championed across America, including environmental resilience and sustainability, commonsense solutions to gun safety, affordable healthcare, mental health care, and a more inclusive economy.”
Hunschofsky is one of several candidates who has earned the endorsement of Win the Era, which was announced in early April following the dissolution of Buttigieg’s presidential campaign.
She was first elected Mayor of Parkland in 2016 and served in the position during the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Before becoming Mayor, Hunschofsky spent nearly four years as a Parkland City Commissioner, seven years on the city’s Education Advisory Board, and currently serves as a member of the Broward League of Cities School and Community Public Safety Task Force.
She is married to her husband Hannes and has two sons, John and Michael.
