The Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team is one step closer to returning to Fort Myers following a sweep of Cypress Bay High School in the opening round of Regionals.
The Eagles beat the Lightning 3-0 on Wednesday behind another incredibly pitched game from Gio Rojas. The left-hander pitched 6.1 scoreless innings and allowed only two hits with 13 strikeouts before Breylynn Courtney punched out the final two players.
“Pitching in a playoff game is like playing in a regular game for me,” Rojas said. “I gotta be able to control my emotions and take it as another regular game where I’m calm and able to cruise like how I usually do.”
The Eagles scored a run in the first on an RBI single from Rojas and then added two more in the fourth. Cade Raley scored on an error before Nick Diaz added an RBI single.
The Eagles then came from behind to win Game 2 after allowing a pair of runs in the first inning. Bennett Gary scored the first run in the home half on a wild pitch before Rojas and Michael Ossenfort registered RBI singles to give MSD a 3-2 lead. Rojas then hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning while Danniel Tartaglia settled in on the mound.
He went on to pitch five innings and struck out five before Chase Wildroudt tossed two scoreless innings in relief for the save. Matthew Toback added an RBI single in the sixth as MSD is now 25-2 and will play either J.P. Taravella or Western High School in the Regional Semifinals. The Trojans won 1-0 in Game 1 after the Wildcats knocked off JPT in the District Title.
