Marjory Stoneman Douglas graduate Rylan Lujo achieved a lifelong dream on Saturday night when he was selected in the fourth round of the 2026 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels.
A four-time Florida state champion at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Lujo put together one of the most decorated careers in program history. He hit over .400 in each of his final two seasons, including a .453 batting average as a senior. During those two years, he also belted 10 home runs, and he finished his high school career with 105 hits and 85 RBIs.
Lujo credits much of his success—and ultimately hearing his name called in the draft—to the culture and coaching staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
“My coaches at MSD helped me so much beyond just the game,” Lujo said. “They taught me how to treat people, how to approach failure, success, and really just the entire game. That’s what really matters in a game like baseball, where you can have a ton of talent and still fail. But when you have a coaching staff like I did to build that foundation, that’s why they keep producing great talent.”
Lujo’s success carried seamlessly into the college ranks. He began his collegiate career at the University of Dayton, where he earned Freshman All-American honors after batting .361 with nine home runs and 56 RBIs. He helped lead the Flyers to 27 wins before transferring to the University of Georgia for his sophomore season.
His production reached another level in the SEC. Lujo hit .357 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs while helping Georgia capture the SEC Tournament championship and earn a trip to the College World Series. During the NCAA Tournament, he batted .310 with three doubles, five home runs, and 11 RBIs across nine games, emerging as one of the Bulldogs’ biggest offensive threats.
After spending his high school career at third base, Lujo also made a seamless transition to center field at Georgia. He posted a .991 fielding percentage while earning First Team All-SEC honors, along with selections to the SEC All-Tournament Team and the Athens Regional All-Tournament Team.
“Rylan was a special player and only continued to improve at the college level,” Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald. “I am happy to see his success, and I know he has a bright future ahead of him.”
Baseball has long been a family tradition for Lujo. His grandfather, Rennie Stennett, was a member of the 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates World Series championship team and became the first player in Major League Baseball history to record seven hits in a nine-inning game. His older brother, Rolando Lujo, also played college baseball and recently signed his first professional contract in the Pecos League, continuing the family’s legacy in the sport.
