The city commission honored a group of Somerset Parkland Academy students and educators for how they kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month at their Oct. 4 meeting.
According to Vice Mayor Simeon Brier, the group kicked off their celebration with passion and celebration under the direction of Spanish teacher Cosette De Jesus, language arts teacher Monica Vasquez, and kindergarten Spanish teacher Veronica Borges.
On the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month, the teachers led the school’s Latin and Hispanic students in a kickoff celebration dressed in flag colors representing their individual countries.
Meg Campbell, school principal, said the school will host a month-long celebration through Oct. 15 to honor the influence and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino communities with a plethora of engaging and educational activities.
This includes the design of a banner that students and teachers displayed at the commission meeting.
The school hosted a “Multicultural Day” event on Oct. 6 that showcased different cultures worldwide, but it emphasized diversity in the Hispanic and Latino communities.
Multicultural Day featured students and staff wearing clothes representing their country’s flags, showcasing Hispanic art and information about influential figures. It offered various culinary options, such as empanadas, tamales, paella, and arepas.
In his remarks, Brier said, “At the heart of the celebrations are the students and their families, who play an active role in this month-long celebration by inviting others to share their stories, learn about their roots, and continue to make connections.”
