Congregation Kol Tikvah in Parkland on Wednesday announced two community events honoring victims of the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks on Israel.
The first gathering will be Sunday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. at the Jewish Federation of Broward County, located inside the David Posnack JCC at 5890 S. Pine Island Road in Davie.
Registration through this page is required to attend.
For those who wish to carpool to the event, attendees will meet at Congregation Kol Tikvah, 6750 N. University Dr., at 2:45 p.m. on Oct. 6. Vehicles will leave promptly at 3 p.m., organizers said.
The Oct. 7 terrorist assault on Israel, led by Hamas, involved the killing of some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the abduction of more than 250 hostages into Gaza, where dozens remain alive in captivity.
“Sadly, almost a year has come and gone, and yet over 100 Israeli hostages are still held in Gaza, Israel is still at war on multiple fronts, and so many lives have been lost in battle,” Congregation Kol Tikvah Rabbi Bradd Boxman said in a written announcement. “The pain and trauma of October 7, 2023, is still too much to bear.”
A second gathering marking the anniversary of the Oct. 7 attacks will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at Congregation Kol Tikvah.
Organizers said the event will be held jointly at the Reform Temple and Coral Springs’ Temple Beth Orr.
Prayers, poems, and music honoring the slain will be shared at the event. According to organizers, three community members will also speak at the commemoration on Oct. 7: Pastor Randall Cutter of New Dawn Community Church in Coral Springs, who is co-chair of the Coral Springs/Parkland Interfaith Clergy Association; Helene Foster, leader of the “Run for Their Lives” program held weekly at Pine Trails Park in Parkland in support of Israeli hostages; and Nitzan Helmer, a young Israeli adult who works with kids at Congregation Kol Tikvah in the field of Israel education.
“I pray that you will join either one or both of the community gatherings to mourn, to remember, and to hope,” Boxman said. “We are all in need of a great deal of healing. Let us find strength and courage by feeling the power of a community united in prayer, forging a path forward for better days ahead.”
