The Westglades Middle School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams have shined to begin the season, combining to go 6-0 this year.
The boys’ team beat Imagine Charter 2-1 in their opening game, followed by 2-1 and 1-0 wins. The Wolves also had a 1-0 lead against Coral Springs Middle School before their fourth game was postponed. Ryan Eagen has scored five of the team’s six goals.
Coaches Danny Gurry and Samantha Pico say they have been incredibly impressed with the boys’ team, which is brand new and has only four returning players.
“Each game, their sense of teamwork and partnership improves,” Gurr said. “We are looking to capitalize on this momentum and secure a spot in the playoffs. We are confident that this is our year to bring home that trophy.”
Their teams feature co-captains Luca Frenquellucci and Jameson O’Neil, along with Luca Ashe, Jonathon Baron, Landon DeCespedes, Eagan, Andrew Edelstein, Luca Frenquellucci, Logan Hoffman, Harrison Kostick, Federico Nino, and Jameson O’Neil. Noah Paniacci, Julien Roden, Benjamin Ruytenbeek, Easton Smith, Anastasios Stratis, Jaoquin Vasiliadis and Brian Weitzner.
The girls’ team won 5-0 in their opening game and then won two more games. They have scored 12 goals and have not allowed one behind solid defense and goaltender Sabrina Cernech. Nadia Tomlinson leads the team with five goals, while Aimee Vignola has netted three. Grace Ulinski and Brooke Billiet scored twice, while Jenna Ashry had one.
“Our girls haven’t had much time to practice together due to our South Florida weather, but it has not seemed to be an issue if you’ve ever watched them play,” Head Coach Kathryn Cottrell said. “They work together, and I am excited to watch these girls continue to crush the competition. I am very optimistic about our postseason.”
The other teams are McKaela Battle, Alexys Caropreso, Sarah Devney, Sabrina Friedman, Jordyn Gibney, Celeste Korol, Mary Mocco, Tenley Plambeck, Alyssa Rodriguez, Nadia Tomlinson, and Sophia Yamhure.
After making the postseason last year, both teams will look to compete for a Championship and will be back in action on Thursday, September 19, against Forest Glen Middle School.
