The Westglades Middle School Speech and Debate team displayed another exceptional performance this past week, with one student taking home top honors.
The Westglades Speech and Debate Team performed exceptionally at the Congressional Debate Mast 4 tournament, with 16 out of 46 students earning well-deserved medals.
The tournament, which took place on Tuesday, December 12, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, featured students from all across Broward County vying to receive accolades from tournament judges. Among the standout performers was Jordyn Weiss, the team’s Speech and Debate Student Historian, who clinched 1st place in the Congressional Debate at MAST 4.
Weiss tells Parkland Talk that she wasn’t only proud of herself for taking home the first place prize but of the entire team that entered the contest with fewer attendees than usual, “Westglades Speech and Debate Team did incredibly well at this past tournament,” adding, “We are extremely proud of our thriving Speech and Debate Team, and we look forward to continuing to see growth in our program.”
The success at the tournament was not only a collective effort but also highlighted the outstanding performance of 6th and 7th graders, with 11 out of the 16 medals won by these talented newcomers to debate.
Competing across a wide range of events, including Poetry, Storytelling, Impromptu, Oratory, Congress, Lincoln Douglas, and Public Forum, Westglades students noted high-level performances across the board.
Weiss says that the event required multiple team members with distinct skill sets, emphasizing the importance of effective communication between the students.
Weiss, who also serves as an officer for the after-school Speech and Debate club, stressed the importance of such programs, sharing, “Speech and debate is more important now than ever as our world is constantly evolving, and it is vital that our younger generation stays informed and knows how to voice an opinion based on research and evidence.”
She adds that the club’s latest performance adds another experience to a long list of those she will take into her High School years and that the Speech and Debate club has impacted her life.
“Speech and debate allowed me to thrive in an activity that has changed me for the better.”
