Thieves are targeting unsuspecting victims in Pine Trails Park and Terramar Park, stealing electronics from parkgoers enjoying the outdoors, authorities said.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Parkland District, there have been five theft cases at the two parks since November. The victims were playing sports while thieves stole their electronics – mostly cellphones – from inside bags set on bleachers.
Some of the victims in the cases are adults and some are children, authorities said.
BSO detectives are investigating the thefts and asking the public for information to help solve the crimes.
Authorities said Parkland residents should safely store or protect their personal items while working out or visiting a park. Among BSO’s tips: Only take necessary personal items to the park, keep your car keys and cell phone with you at all times, keep other personal items in your locked car out of sight, and be aware of your surroundings.
Children should be encouraged to place their electronics in a safe place or avoid taking them to the park while they attend practice or play, authorities said.
Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to contact BSO Sergeant Stacie Venezia at 954-753-5050 or submit a tip through the SaferWatch app.
Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477), submit a tip online at browardcrimestoppers.org, or dial **TIPS (8477) from any cellphone in the U.S.
