The Marjory Stoneman Douglas girls wrestling team made history on Saturday, winning their division’s first-ever BCAA County Championship.
Haasini Vattikuti, Grace Mackenzie, Mickayla Sugrano, Addison McMahon, and Gaby Caro came first, while Mia Velasquez, Veronika Kushnir, and Ariana Blanc finished second. Elizabeth Velasco, Aniyah Smith, and Jessica Rice came in third, with Valeria Bonilla placing fifth.
The boys team finished in fourth place, with Rocco Duygulu winning his second straight BCAA Championship, pinning all four of his opponents. David Leiva also took first place after finishing as a runner-up last year.
“It feels great to win the county title back to back,” Duygulu said. “Just last year, I was Coach Gendason’s first-ever County Champ, and to come back and now make it coach’s first two-time county champ is an honor. I’m out for the regional title now, and Miami better watch out.”
Other notable performances from MSD came from Jimmy Messmer, who came in second after beating the third seed. Jeremy Lopez and Jackson Zajkowski came in fifth, while Jacob Balk and Keegan Lake placed sixth. Arav Shintre placed eighth, with Lucas Siqueira and Kevin Steinberg combining to win three matches by pin.
Next, MSD will compete in Districts on Tuesday, February 13, 2024.
