The Marjory Stoneman Douglas flag football team is off to a strong start this season, going 6-1 in their first seven games.
The Eagles began the year with a 6-0 win against Deerfield Beach High School on February 21, with quarterbacks Alina Caravello and Samantha Calavetta throwing for over 100 yards passing. Savannah Tenore scored the lone touchdown before MSD beat Chaminade Madonna High School 20-0 behind 164 passing yards from Calavetta. Alina Caravello, Kayley Partlan, and Mickayla Sugrano caught passes for touchdowns. The Eagles finally gave up their first points of the season and were held scoreless in a 12-0 loss against Boyd H. Anderson High School on February 26.
MSD responded with three more wins last week, beating Olympic Heights Community High School 20-6. Heymach scored three touchdowns, including receiving scores on passes from Calavetta. Tenore and Heymach also scored touchdowns in their 20-0 win before MSD knocked off Coral Glades 18-7. Sugrano and Kenslee Ward caught touchdown passes, while Courtney Heymach had a rushing score.
The Eagles’ biggest win of the season came against Plantation High School 50-0 on Monday behind six touchdown passes from Calavetta and Caravello. Tenore and Ward combined for four touchdown passes, with Alessia Frenquellucci and Sugrano also catching one, along with Morgan Goldman returning an interception for a score in the teams fifth shutout.
Coach Baldwin is also impressed with the tremendous growth and interest in the sport. The Eagles had roughly 75 players come out to tryouts and featured a junior varsity team that is also an off to a strong start. The Eagles’ next game is against Hollywood Hills High School on Thursday, March 14, at 4:30 p.m. and will be back home on Monday, March 18 against Monarch High School at 4:30 p.m.
