Seniors From the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Baseball Team. {954 Preps}
The dynasty continued for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team on Saturday, as they won their record-setting fifth straight State Championship against Jupiter High School.
The Eagles, the top ranked team in Florida and nations fourth best team, became the first team in FHSAA history to win five straight titles after a 3-2 win against former J.P. Taravella Head Coach Joe Giummule.
Daniel Tartaglia worked himself into trouble in the two innings, but allowed only one run before Jake Rizzo put the Eagles ahead in the second. Rizzo then made a big play in the top of the third, cutting down the tying run at the plate before Chase Wildrodut took over in the fourth.
The Tribe continued to get base runners, but they stranded 12 through the first five innings after Breylynn Courtney came into a bases-loaded jam in the fifth and retired Tennessee commit Griffin Miller on a comebacker.
Rizzo continued to shine and led off the home half with a single and came around to score on an RBI single from Michael Ossenfort. Jupiter would not go down without a fight and would cut the lead to one in the sixth. They would try to steal a run but had a runner picked off third to close the sixth before Courtney had the first 1-2-3 inning of the night in the seventh to lock down the win.
“Still in disbelief from that moment and winning it all,” Rizzo said. “Obviously, knowing the stakes of the game and the necessity to pull through, i just tried my best to stay calm and take deep breaths.”
Offensively, the Eagles hit 25 home runs this season from nine different players, including five from Lorenzo Laurel and Bennett Gary. Nick Diaz, Jake Rizzo, Drew Freeman, Gio Rojas, and Michael Ossenfort had at least two, while Raley and Mathew Toback had one.
MSD previously beat Alonso High School 5-0 in the State Semifinals behind a complete game shutout from Rojas. The left hander completed the season 12-0 with a .72 era and 119 strikeouts in 68 innings. Tartaglia and Chase Wildroudt combined for 13 wins, while Breylynn Courtney had two wins with seven saves Carter McGuinn also had a victory.
The Eagles finished the season 31-2, which also included them winning a BCAA District and Regional Championship. During their five-year run, MSD has won 144 of its 155 games. MSD will return several significant players next year, but will have Luke Cherry, Torres, Gary, Courtney, Freeman, Jonathan Rodriguez, Diaz, Gabe Rodrigo, Michael Ossenfort, Carter Wojcik, Wildroudt, Andrew Sarro, Payton Jay, and Tartaglia graduate this spring.
Currently, 11 of these seniors are signed to play college baseball. Cherry, Torres, Gary, and Diaz all finished their high school careers with three State Titles. Courtney, Freeman, Rodriguez Ossenfort, Sarro, and Jay won two titles, while Rodrigo, Wojcik, Wildroudt, and Tartaglia all won their first.
