Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball has competed in three BCAA Championships and has won all three after three victories this week.
Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald says the team’s win at the BCAA Championship shows where they are early in the year.
“We have plenty of guys who haven’t experienced playing in bigger games yet, so the more we can put them in these situations early in the year, the better off the team will be down the road,” Fitz-Gerald said.
The Eagles began the tournament with a matchup against Coral Springs Charter, as the Panthers had their ace, Marcelo Young, on the mound. MSD allowed a run in the first and were scoreless through the first three innings, but they broke through in the fourth, with Jake Rizzo driving in two with a single.
Danny Targlia stuck out nine in four innings before MSD broke the game open with four runs in the fifth. Bennett Gary homered before Matthew Toback had an RBI single. Lorenzo Laurel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Rizzo drove in his third-game run with a sacrifice fly.
Gio Rojas got the ball in the second game and had his only blemish come on a solo home run in the second inning. He improved to 3-0 this year, tossing 4.1 innings with 12 strikeouts. Breylynn Courtney got the final five, working himself out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh. Santiago Rincoln laced an RBI single in the second to tie the game at one. He was later picked off first base, but Rizzo stole home to give MSD their first lead. Rizzo then homered in the fourth to help MSD win 3-1.
In the final, the Eagles beat West Broward High School 3-0 behind a strong performance from Chase Wildroudt. He struck out five in 5.2 innings before Andrew Sarro came in and recorded a dour out save. Rizzo added two more RBIs, while Gary also knocked in one.
MSD is now 6-1 and will continue its tough schedule with a game against Palmer Trinity High School on Tuesday, March 4, at 6 p.m. The Falcons are 5-2 this year and reached Regionals last year after winning 20 games. The Eagles will play Boca Raton Community High School two days later before a rematch against West Broward High School on Friday, March 7.
