In a surprising twist on high school baseball, Marjory Stoneman Douglas’ Team Manager, Chloe Moquin, has become the secret sauce to the team’s success during the past two State and National Championship teams.
Chloe, the older sister to MSD outfielder Dillon Moquin, was diagnosed with autism and dyslexia when she was eight. She always had two major passions: watching baseball and getting to know the players.
Since Dillon was 11, he played for Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald, and Chloe was always around. In 2022, they approached Fitz-Gerald about the possibility of her becoming a team manager. Without hesitation, he brought Chloe on and awarded Chloe with the first National Managers Coach of the Year Award during the team’s annual banquet on May 31.
“I felt so proud when I received the award,” Chloe said. “I feel like I am part of the team and hope to make an impact on the boys. This is what you get when you work hard.”
Chloe has been with the team for 59 of the team’s 61 games. The two she missed were the only losses MSD has had in the last two years as the Eagles became the first public school in Florida to finish the undefeated season in 2023.
Her roles include lining up the bats and ensuring the water and Gatorade is full. The part she says she loves the best is cheering on the team and telling the team, “Let’s go, boys! I didn’t come here to lose.”
“She is an inspiration and such a great kid who loves the baseball team,” Fitz-Gerald said. “She takes care of me during games so I don’t lose my hat and glasses. She has been one of the best things to ever happen to the program and will always be part of the family.”
Chloe graduated from MSD on Sunday alongside her brother. While Dillon will be playing college baseball at Appalachian State University, Chloe will continue as a student in the WOW Program for Broward Schools at Monarch High School, which takes students to a local hotel to learn job skills.
“These past two years with my sister in the dugout have been a blessing,” Dillon said. “I’m just thankful for all the coaches and my teammates for accepting her. I really think she shined a light on the team and gave us a different perspective to look at the game. She has been such a big impact on all of us boys.”
